LONDON (MNI) – The UK’s goods trade deficit widened in June to its
widest level since December as exports of oil fell sharply, figures
released by National Statistics showed Tuesday.

The global goods deficit widened to Stg8.873 billion in June from
Stg8.467 billion in May, above the median forecast of Stg8.2 billion.

The value of exports fell 4.8% on the month, while imports were
down 2.4%.

The headline numbers, however, masked an overall improvement in the
underlying deficit excluding oil and erratic items, where the deficit
narrowed to Stg7.678 billion in June from Stg8.254 billion in May.

The main reason for the deterioration in the headline balance was a
15.1% decline in oil exports, with the oil shortfall widening to
Stg1.452 billion, the largest monthly deficit since July 2008.

National Statistics said there was anecdotal evidence of unplanned
maintenance work in oil fields during the month.

The trade deficit with non-EU countries widened to Stg5.718 billion
in June from Stg5.053 billion in May, while the EU shortfall narrowed to
Stg3.155 billion from Stg3.414 billion.
