Tokyo's main index closes lower on the day in topsy turvy trading

  • Session high 21,371.01
  • Session low 20,950.15

The Nikkei ends the day lower, but not as bad as it could've been. It's been a wild trading day for Japanese investors. Losses were tepid at the start of the day, but post-lunch selling saw the index fall to a low of -1.21% before recovering (bounce off the 200-day MA) and even posting gains heading into the final hour of trading.

But it all came tumbling back down ahead of the close, and alas, here we are. The movements here has also led to some gyrations in USD/JPY, in which the pair is now trading at 107.19 - after hitting lows of 106.84 on the day.

Other Asian markets are faring a little better, with the Hang Seng up by 1.23% and China's Shanghai Composite index up by 0.42% on the day.
