Trump cites 'big progress'
The weekend news that mattered was a tweet from Donald Trump.
"Just had a long and very good call with President Xi of China. Deal is moving along very well. If made, it will be very comprehensive, covering all subjects, areas and points of dispute. Big progress being made!"
It's unclear who initiated the call but a mid-level US delegation is heading to China in the week of January 7.
The comment is likely to give markets a lift as the re-open. Early indications show USD/JPY up 11 pips but it's very early and trading will be quiet in the first 48 hours of the week.
