The Japanese government had plans to force firms to raise wages by stepping into annual wage negotiations between labour unions and management but sources have told Reuters that they will step back from this now.
They have decided that to do so would be unreasonable to insist on wage rises while not backing efforts to raise productivity and profitability.
Abe & Co will instead continue debating wage and labour reforms with businesses and unions.
