Comments by ECB governing council member, Francois Villeroy de Galhau, in an interview with Reuters yesterday

ECB Villeroy
  • Timing of rate hike hinges on whether or not the current slowdown is a blip
  • "The key question will be if the slowdown is temporary or more durable"
  • There is a strong convergence about sequencing next policy steps
  • Economic outlook clouded by the threat of protectionism and Brexit
  • ECB would be pragmatic in use of its main policy tools

That's pretty much the question on everyone's lips right now when it comes to the Eurozone economy. The more concerning part is that policymakers and lawmakers have been brushing aside this slowdown as being "temporary" for over a year now. It's hard to imagine them being more confident about an economic rebound now than they were at any point last year.

But I guess when you take 99 swings with the bat, eventually you're going to get 1 hit somehow or other.
