DUP leader, Arlene Foster, comments on BBC Radio 4

Foster DUP
  • Backstop would divide UK on trade
  • Backstop must be replaced
  • Have raised opposition to backstop repeatedly with Theresa May
  • Will support May if the backstop is replaced/removed
  • Says that DUP wants a Brexit deal but with no backstop

It appears May is very much being cornered by UK lawmakers to have the Irish backstop replaced/removed from the withdrawal agreement but this is something that the European Union would never agree to. Hence, the current deadlock in Brexit talks and why markets are quietly fearing prospects of a no-deal Brexit right now.

I don't believe there will be some breakthrough or resolution being found on this. An extension to Article 50 looks to be the way things will play out, although we could go right down to the wire on that one. 52 days to go. Tick tock, tick tock.
