FRANKFURT (MNI) – The European Commission is ready to resume
discussions on EU and IMF financial aid for Hungary after receiving
assurances that Budapest will respect the independence of its central
bank, a Commission spokesman said during the Commission’s daily press
briefing on Wednesday.

“Guarantees have been provided by the Hungarian authorities
vis-a-vis the independence of the central bank,” the spokesman said. As
a result the Commission “is today prepared to discuss financial
assistance as requested by Hungary from the EU and the IMF last
November.”

“There is clear evidence and guarantees that the law with regards
to the Hungarian central bank will be changed,” the spokesman said. He
added that the Commission will of course continue to closely monitor
developments but said the Commission “trusts” that all conditions will
be met.

No date has been set yet for the resumption of financial assistance
negotiations with Hungary, the spokesman said.
