Tensions flare up as Hammond is at odds with May's spending intentions
The headline was partly what weighed on the pound earlier in Asia Pacific trading with cable being nudged to a low of 1.2512 before recovering to near flat levels now.
The reports said that Hammond is opposing May's plans to spend up to £9 billion each year on education over the next three years as the government seeks to ask Hammond to free up money from the £26.6 billion "war chest" he set aside in case of a no-deal Brexit.
It'll be somewhat extraordinary to seem him resign considering that May will be out of office soon enough. But hey, we've seen stranger things happen in politics.
