The European Commission is said to want Italy to cut more

La Stampa is out with a report now saying that Italy and the European Commission are about €4 billion apart from settling on a budget resolution. Meanwhile, Repubblica is reporting that the difference is about €4.5 billion. Do note that this comes after Italy has decided to revise lower its key measures in the budget to propose a deficit of 2.04% from 2.4% earlier.

In another report, the FT also suggested here that the concessions made by Italy are also possibly not enough to placate the European Commission.

For some context, the two main items that Italy's populist government has been pushing for in the budget has been citizens' income and pension reforms. In the original proposal, those two comprised of about €9 billion and €7 billion respectively; and they take up majority of the budget.

I reckon that's where the European Commission wants Italy to scale back on its budget but in doing so the government may not be able to do good on its election promises, and that's something they're actively trying to avoid still.
