ONS will release the UK retail sales data for January on 16 February 0930 GMT

And don't be too shocked by a downside surprise on the figures.

Earlier in the day, we had Visa reporting that household spending fell by 1.2% y/y in January. While Visa doesn't hold the entire base of consumer payments, it still accounts for a significant portion - roughly 1/3.

The UK consumer issue has been one that's been on the agenda for the past year, but so far that hasn't stopped the sterling in its tracks in 2018.

Anyway, just a little heads up ahead of the figures later on in the week.

The expected numbers are for a growth of +0.6% m/m and +2.5% y/y. Ex auto and fuel figures are expected at +0.6% m/m and +2.4% y/y. Prior reading can be found here.
