Trade deal back on the menu?

Trump tweets that Vice Premier Liu He is traveling to US.

"China has just informed us that they (Vice-Premier) are now coming to the U.S. to make a deal. We'll see," he wrote in a series of tweets.

At the same time, the US has issued the formal note on increasing tariffs to 25% on $200 billion of Chinese goods. The hike will take place on Friday.

In the notice, the USTR said it will establish a process for individuals to seek exclusions for certain products from additional tariffs.

US stock futures have pared losses on Trump's tweet.

However, just because the Chinese VP is coming, it doesn't mean that he's going to concede. The Chinese press reports that his visit will start Thursday and be shorter than expected.

In a commentary published on its WeChat account on Tuesday, People's Daily warned the US to "not even think about" concessions.

"When things are unfavourable to us, no matter how you ask, we will not take any step back. Do not even think about it," the commentary said.
