The latest US government figures

  • Estimates of the surplus ranged from $12B to $25B
  • December was -$13.5B
  • January 2018 was +$49.24B
  • Fiscal year-to-date deficit of $310B vs $176B a year ago
  • Outlays $331B vs $312B a year ago
  • Receipts $340B vs $361B a year ago

January is typically a surplus month for the US government as outlays and repayments are low. The deficit is not in a good place for this point in the cycle, but that isn't news to anyone.
