G8

The G8 or the group of eight was an intergovernmental political forum until 2014. Its origins date back to the 1975 summit hosted by France that brought together representatives of six countries: the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Germany, Italy, and France. Finally, in 1997 Russia was added as the eighth member of the group and the group became known as the G8. The members of the group comprise roughly half of the global GDP highlighting the big impact these economies can have on the entire world. The group doesn’t have legislative powers to enforce the planned policies but nonetheless can have significant weight on the global economy. In 2014 after Russia annexed Crimea, the G8 became again G7 as Russia was suspended indefinitely and then in 2017 Russia announced its permanent withdrawal from the G8. The summits are hosted every summer in one of the group members’ countries on a yearly rotating basis beginning with France and ending with Canada.
