FRANKFURT (MNI) – The European Central Bank’s Governing Council
will become a men’s club, at least for the time being, if a German
newspaper report issued Monday turns out to be true.

German business daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung says that
Eurozone Finance Ministers will nominate Belgium’s Peter Praet to fill
the ECB Executive Board position of outgoing member Gertrude
Tumpel-Gugerell at their meeting today. The paper cited EU diplomats.

Tumpel-Gugerell, an Austrian national, is currently the only female
on the 23-member Governing Council.

The 62-year-old Belgian is thought to be “clearly” more qualified
than Slovakia’s Elena Kohutikova, initially considered a top candidate.

The final decision on Tumpel-Gugerell’s succession will fall to
Eurozone heads of state and government, probably in March, FAZ wrote.

Tumpel-Gugerell’s term expires at the end of May this year.
