German Economic Minister Altmaier warns against trade war ahead of trip to US

Altmaier will meet, among others, with his US counterpart Wilbur Ross

Discussions to centre on tariffs. Prior to leaving Altmaier spoke with German media:

• A trade war "would end up to the detriment of the citizens in both regions"
• Says he'll "represent our European and German interests confidently and in a friendly manner"
• "I want us to continue to produce steel in Germany at competitive prices"

Altmaier is a noob to the position, only just sworn in
