Nuclear war?

Nuclear war?

The biggest event in the world right now is the rapid escalation in hostilities between India and Pakistan. They shot down each other's planes yesterday and Pakistan has captured an India pilot.

That comes after airstrikes in each other's territory. It was the first time India had crossed the Line of Control and struck inside Pakistan since 1971.

The hostilities started Feb 14 after a suicide bombing killed 40 Indian soldiers.

There are now reports of heavy exchange of gunfire along the Line of Control in the Kashmir region.

The good news is that Pakistani Prime Minister Khan has spoken of a desire to avoid war in a televised address:

"I am talking to India: We need to use wisdom and sagacity. All big wars have been due to miscalculation. No one knew how the war would end," he said. "My question to India is that given the weapons we have, can we afford miscalculation?" He added: "We should solve our problems through dialogue."

Here's a recap of what's happened so far in the New York Times.
