TOKYO (MNI) – The government has decided to keep its economic
assessment unchanged in its monthly economic report for May, maintaining
that “the economy has been picking up steadily,” the Nikkei reported on
Friday.

Official data released Thursday showed that Japan’s economy grew
4.9% at an annualized rate in January-March but the government has
concluded that it needs to examine more indicators to determine whether
the economic recovery is self-sustaining.

Finance Minister Naoto Kan will submit the May report to a cabinet
meeting of economic ministers Monday.

The government upgraded its overall assessment of the economy from
“picking up” to “picking up steadily” in its March report, then stuck
with “picking up steadily” in April’s report.
