Schaeuble says he would ‘naturally’ prefer Sarkozy wins the French election.
Earlier in the year Merkel was campaigning with Sarkozy. With Germany is already dictating fiscal policy to eurozone countries, getting involved in elections crosses the line.
French voters are not going to be swayed by German politicians (perhaps the opposite) but it’s poor diplomacy and underscores growing concerns in Europe about German dominance. The only comment from a politician on a foreign election should be ‘no comment’.
