This comes after Merkel's CDU party suffered a drubbing in the latest state elections in Hesse over the weekend. Although the result was expected, the fact that they lost a considerable amount of support throws a heap of uncertainty in the air surrounding Germany's political landscape.

According to some sources now, CDU party leaders will meet next week to discuss on plans. The party's congress is slated for December this year and Merkel previously said last month that she will still stand for re-election then; but looks to have a change of heart now.

That has sent the euro lower on the day with EUR/USD touching a low of 1.1367 on the back of the reports here.
