Some comments by German chancellor Angela Merkel in a speech to her CDU party in Berlin

  • New government will signal a new start for Europe

Nothing else of note by Merkel, just a light address of the current situation. At the moment, Merkel is already playing the cabinet shuffle game and picking her line up as she prepares to get into her new term.

But not all is done and dusted just yet. Merkel looks confident now but on 4 March there will be the announcement of the results of the postal votes by SPD members on the coalition deal. If they reject the deal, a new election is likely or if not, a minority government will have to be formed.

In my view, the chances of this happening is slim, but you can't really rule that out, can you? We've seen stranger things happen in politics.
