The Nikkei closes the day down 2.3% at 19,561.96

Japanese markets are back open for business today and it's mostly the case of playing catch up to the declines seen in global equities over the past few days. Hence, don't look much into the drop suffered by Japanese stocks today as an indication of risk sentiment.

Other Asian equities are faring decently with the Hang Seng up 1.4%, likewise for the Shanghai Composite index. Meanwhile, US equity futures are also trading near the highs for the day with S&P 500 futures now up by 0.6% ahead of European trading.

The positive spin on risk to start the day is helping to keep the aussie and yen pairs underpinned. AUD/USD sits at 0.7017 currently while USD/JPY trades at 108.28 at the moment.
