And when will that come to fruition?
- May will tell EU leaders that she is holding cross-party talks
- It does remain the case that legal default is a no-deal on 12 April
- Rationale for short extension is that May believes both UK and EU needs certainty
- Meetings with Merkel and Macron are to set out why UK needs short extension
- And that is to secure ratification of withdrawal agreement
The issue with providing a short extension once is that this could be a rolling issue so long as the Brexit deal fails to get ratified. It's more of a case that if it can be extended once this time around, there isn't any valid reasoning for why it shouldn't be allowed to be extended again. Thus, creating the endless loop of potential Brexit extensions down the road.
Update: A UK official now says that May is planning a Brexit statement on Thursday. No time given but I reckon the details will be subject to how things play out over the next two days.
