UK PM spokesman says May will never agree to backstop that will trap UK in a customs union permanently
Comments by UK PM spokeswoman Alison Donnelly
- Backstop must be temporary
- Future economic relationship needs to be in place by the end of December 2020
- Big issues remain in Brexit talks ahead of EU Summit next week
Right, so no comments by Theresa May herself but sending out someone else instead. But it pretty much confirms the message that is sent across earlier in the day. That indicates that there will definitely be a sticking point in negotiations as the EU is adamant on leaving the backstop agreement period open-ended while the UK wants to put a deadline on it.
