WASHINGTON (MNI) – There were 48,711 layoff intentions announced in
November, up from 37,986 in November, but down from the 50,349 job cuts
announced in November 2009, job placement firm Challenger, Gray and
Christmas, Inc. said in a report released Wednesday. The data are not
seasonally adjusted.

Layoffs in November were led by the government sector, which
reported 10,761 job reductions in the month.

“Government and non-profit job cuts are down 16 percent from a year
ago, but that is probably little consolation to employees in the sector,
which is still struggling despite signs of recovery in other areas of
the economy,” said John Challenger, chief executive officer of
Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

“Unfortunately, 2011 may not offer much respite for workers in the
sector as many newly elected members of Congress are pushing for
significant federal spending cuts,” he added.

In other data released, hiring intentions fell sharply to 26,012 in
November from 124,766 in October, but were up from 10,076 in November
2009.

November hiring plans were again led by the retail sector, which
reported hiring plans of 15,900 in November after much larger increases
in the previous two months. The retail sector reported no hiring in
November 2009.
