Slow start for US stocks

The US stocks are open for the holiday shortened week and they open with modest declines. The snapshot of the major indices are showing:

  • S&P index down -3 points or -0.11% at 2772.59
  • Nasdaq -1 point or -0.01% at 7470
  • Dow is down -12 points or -0.05%

The US yeilds are heading lower and that has pressured the dollar in early trading:

  • 2 year 2.497%, down -1.6 bps
  • 5 year 2.469%, -2.3 basis points
  • 10 year 2.646%, -1.6 basis points
  • 30 year 2.980%, -1.3 basis points

In other markets:

  • spot gold is up $6.20 or 0.47% at $1333.10
  • WTI crude oil futures are down $.09 or -0.11% $55.50
  • bitcoin is extending higher today. It is up $72.58 at $3924.09 and is trading above and away from its 100 day moving average of $3843.51. The digital currency got a boost yesterday on the news that JP Morgan Chase was to introduce its own crypto currency

The GBP remains the strongest currency (it was as the start of the North American session too). The NZD is rebounded after the better GDT auction results (and+0.9%). The CAD is now the weakest of the major currencies. The USD is mixed with gains vs the CAD, AUD and NZD, and declines vs the GBP, CHF and near unchanged vs the EUR and JPY.
