S&P unchanged but no new record close
Today is the Dow's turn to close at a record. It rose by 41 points or 0.16% but was up 182 points at the high. Still a record for the Dow 30.
The S&P was near unchanged, but lower by a little. No record close today. The Nasdaq was the index that suffered the most today. At the high today, it was up over 8.0% for the month. So a little correction was overdue.
- The S&P index is ending the session down -1.57 points or -0.06% at 2837.56. The high reached 2852.97. The low extended to 2824.81
- The Nasdaq fell by -45.23 points or -0.61% at 7415.05
The overachievers today were led by financials which benefited from higher yields:
- Citigroup, up 1.8%
- J.P. Morgan, up 1.3%
- Netflix added another 4.39% after yesterday's big run-up on earnings
- Deutsche Bank up 1.44%
- Alibaba up 1.7%
- SPDR Gold shares rose 1.23%. The lower dollar helped to push spot gold up $17
- Goldman Sachs up 2.12%
- Wells Fargo 1.63%
- American Express up 1.36%
- Whirlpool added 4.48% after a similar game yesterday on the back of the Trump tariffs on overseas washing machines
The underachievers included:
- Apple -1.59%. Report that iPhone sales would be less in the 1st quarter hurt the stock
- Nvidia fell by -1.3%. It has been surging of late
- Tesla fell -2.0%
- Twitter fell -1.67%
- Celgene fell -1.38%
- Intel fell -1.22%
- Facebook fell -1.48%
- Delta Airlines tumbled by -5.22%
- United Continental also fell sharply at -11.43% on earnings
