FRANKFURT (MNI) – Eurogroup chief Jean-Claude Juncker is urging the
governments of the Eurozone to name candidates to replace European
Central Bank Executive Board member Gertrude Tumpel-Gugerell by the next
meeting of finance ministers in January, Financial Times Deutschland
reported Thursday.
According to the paper, which did not identify its sources, Germany
is aiming for a “package solution” under which not only would a
replacement be decided for Tumpel-Gugerell, whose term ends at the end
of next May, but also for ECB President Jean-Claude Trichet, whose
mandate is over October 31.
Such a “package solution” could determine the occupants of a total
of four positions, the FTD wrote. One is the post of ECB chief
economist, currently held by Juergen Stark who, as a German, could not
remain on the bank’s executive board if another German — Axel Weber,
for example — were to succeed Trichet. The other is the post of
European Investment Bank president, currently held by Philippe Maystadt.
