BERLIN (MNI) – A senior member of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s
parliamentary group demanded Wednesday that creditors also contribute to
the aid package for Greece.
“I would support this,” Nobert Barthle, the CDU/CSU’s parliamentary
budget speaker, said ahead of a meeting between German parliamentarians,
European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet and International
Monetary Fund Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn.
Barthle said creditors should accept a modest haircut on Greek debt
or a “prolongation” of Greek debt maturities.
Barthle said there was significant resistance inside the CDU/CSU
parliamentary group against aid for Greece without participation of the
creditors.
He added, “I cannot assess” if there will be a majority inside the
parliamentary group for German aid to Greece at the moment.
