BERLIN (MNI) – Germany supports the idea of giving the Eurozone a
budget of its own to support measures to enhance competitiveness of the
member states, government spokesman Steffen Seibert said Wednesday.
“We see this as a possible way to make available limited funds for
a limited time period for concrete projects,” Seibert said at a regular
government press conference here.
He added that it was too early to say if the proceeds from the
planned European financial transaction tax could be used for such a
Eurozone budget. For the moment, the Finance Ministry is planning to use
the revenue from the tax for Germany’s national budget.
Seibert expressed satisfaction that the four major economies of the
Eurozone — Germany, France, Italy and Spain — are among the eleven
European states willing to jointly introduce a financial transaction
tax. “This is a good sign,” he said.
