FRANKFURT (MNI) – Employment in Germany increased for the 21st
consecutive month in November to yet another record high, while
unemployment fell further, the Federal Statistical Office reported on
Tuesday.
Taking into account the upward revisions of past months, the number
of persons gainfully employed rose by a seasonally adjusted 50,000
(+0.1%) in November to 41.188 million. Over the same period, the number
of jobless fell by 50,000 to 2.34 million in ILO terms, trimming the
unemployment rate by 0.1 point to 5.5%.
Hiring in the manufacturing sector continued “at a solid pace” in
December, according to the PMI report. “That said, the overall rate of
job creation was the weakest since May 2010, the report added, noting
that firms remained concerned about the general business outlook.
On Monday, the statistics office reported that employment rose 1.3%
last year to a record high of 41.041 million, the sixth consecutive
annual increase. Figures for December will be released at the end of
this month.
The upward trend in employment is expected to carry over into 2012,
the Ifo institute’s Employment Barometer showed. However, as the
indicator dipped for the third consecutive month, “employment growth is
expected to continue at a slower pace,” the institute warned, noting
that the share of manufacturers looking to expand staff had declined
“slightly”.
At 8:55 GMT today, the Labour Ministry is scheduled to release
jobless figures for December.
