Comments from White House Council of Economic Advisers Chairman Kevin Hassett
"My guess is we will see something by the fall," Hassett told Fox Business Saturday. He said they are making "absolutely amazing" progress toward a deal.
However he cautioned that he was not a negotiator in the talks but that his colleagues have indicated they're going well.
There has been an abundance of optimism from the US on talks in the past week but less so from Canada and Mexico. On August 2, US duties on Canadian newsprint are also scheduled to be finalized (or reversed) with a final decision from the Commerce Dept.
US and Mexican negotiators are meeting now and in the week ahead. The US angle at the moment appears to be trying to get concessions from Mexico and then using them to squeeze Canada.
