–Haven’t Received Request for Aid From Spain
WASHINGTON (MNI) – The International Monetary Fund is not working
on any plans for loans to Spain, IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde
said Thursday.
In response to a question about a story published by the Wall
Street Journal saying the IMF was planning financial assistance to
Spain, Lagarde said, “There is no such plan. We have not received any
request to that effect and we are not doing any work in relation to any
financial support. ”
The IMF released a statement with the comments following Lagarde’s
meeting with Spain Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria.
“We had a very productive meeting and I was pleased to meet the
Vice President of Spain,” Lagarde said in the statement, using the title
by which she is known in Spain.
The official also met with Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner.
