There’s an interesting profile of Akira Amari, Japan’s minister for economic and fiscal policy, the minister in charge of economic revitalization and reforming social security and taxes, and head negotiator for the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade pact. The article is an interesting profile of Amari, but it also (briefly) touches on the sort of reforms needed in the ‘third arrow’ of Prime Minister Abe’s ‘3rd arrow’, & the resistance these face.
- The TPP pact (Trans-Pacific Partnership trade pact) that he’s negotiating offers Japan’s exporters more access to the U.S. and other markets, but many Japanese farmers oppose the talks because the pact would cut tariffs that protect domestic rice, milk, meats, wheat and dairy goods
- Amari also faces resistance in the area of health-care
