TOKYO (MNI) – Housing starts in Japan rose 5.8% in June from a year
earlier to 72,687 units, posting a third consecutive year-on-year rise,
the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism said on
Friday.

The increase in June was stronger than the consensus call of a 5.1%
rise.

It followed +6.4% in May, +0.3% in April and -2.4% in March, when
housing construction marked the first y/y drop in 10 months, hit by the
March 11 earthquake disaster.

The seasonally adjusted annualized rate of housing starts stood at
817,000 units in June, up from 815,000 units in May.

The breakdown follows (year-on-year changes in the previous month
in parentheses):

— Owner-occupied houses -2.6% y/y at 26,931 units (vs. -2.9% in
May), the second y/y fall in row.

— Houses for rent +4.6% y/y at 26,023 units (vs. -5.0% in May),
the first rise in nine months.

— Condominiums and houses for sale +21.6% at 19,090 units (vs.
+42.9% in May), the 16th consecutive y/y rise.
