TOKYO (MNI) – Department store sales in Japan fell 1.9% in November
on weather factors, posting the fifth straight year-on-year drop after
-0.% in October, data released by the Japan Department Stores
Association showed on Monday.

The association said November sales slumped as relatively high
temperatures and frequent rainfalls in the first half of the month
dampened demand for winter clothing and kept shoppers away from stores.

But it also said November sales were “relatively firm” due partly
to solid demand for high-end watches and other luxury goods.

The association compiled data from 86 companies running 254
department stores that have been open for at least a year prior to the
survey being conducted. The data are adjusted to facilitate comparisons
on a same-store basis.

In Tokyo, combined sales at 26 department stores fell 3.0% on the
year in November, posting the fifth straight y/y fall after -1.9% in
October and -3.6% in September.
