TOKYO (MNI) – Sales at supermarkets in Japan open for at least a
year fell 3.6% in September from a year earlier to Y987.1 billion,
posting the second straight y/y fall in light of bad weather conditions,
an industry group said Monday.

Sales fell as two major typhoons hit Japan in September, and
relatively high temperatures in the first half of the month dampened
demand for autumn clothing, data released by the Japan Department Stores
Association showed.

The decrease followed -2.2% in August, +2.1% in July, +0.1% in June
and -1.4% y/y in May.

The latest figures are based on the combined sales at 60
supermarket chains which together operate 8,021 outlets. The numbers
have been adjusted to facilitate comparison on a same-store basis.

Including sales at stores newly opened during the past year,
revenue rose 0.6%, with the pace of increase decelerating from +2.4% in
August.
