— Supermarket Sales Post Falls For 7 Months In Row

TOKYO (MNI) – Sales at supermarkets in Japan open for at least a
year fell 2.0% in September from a year earlier to Y966.5 billion,
posting the seventh straight fall y/y, after -1.3% in August, an
industry group said on Monday.

High temperatures, especially in northern part of Japan, dampened
demand for autumn and winter items such as blankets and clothing, the
association said.

The latest figures are based on the combined sales at 57
supermarket chains which together operate 7,815 outlets. The numbers
have been adjusted to facilitate comparisons on a same-store basis.

Including sales at stores newly opened during the past year,
revenues fell 2.1% in September, after -2.2% in August.
