The People's Daily earlier reported that Xi's position to open up China's economy is not at the cost of its own interests

  • China would never pursue a wider opening at the expense of its national interests
  • Decision to promote further opening has nothing to do with US-China trade frictions
  • China won't offer favourable policies to nations that violate WTO rules

The headlines broke out earlier here.

Xi's comments on opening up the economy further is not something new and surely not something that his government has not preached over the years. Sure he has made some promises with regards to autos (and there has been plenty more talk over the years), but until the deed is done I'm not too sure if this is enough to get Trump to the negotiation table.
