Further to Mike’s post the EU energy commissioner says that the money from the IMF and EU aid packages should be used to pay for gas deliveries up until now and also for the coming weeks.
It’s a bit of a mess. Ukraine had already built up a gas debt before Russia raised prices. Now they are sitting on €3.1bn of aid and still arguing over prices. I would have thought that they would have been paid from Europe and have no cause to argue about paying the earlier owed debt?
The clock is also ticking on Putin’s threat to go to pre-payment.
