LONDON (MNI) – UK Prime Minister David Cameron has said that the
euro zone’s fiscal compact will not solve the single currency’s problems
on its own.
“Clearly a fiscal compact on its own, it may be a necessary part
but it is not a sufficient part. There are other things the euro zone
will have to do to make the single currency work properly,” Cameron said
at a press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin.
Cameron also told reporters that Britain would not take part in any
European banking union although he said that he could see that this
made for those countries in the single currency.
“I wouldn’t, for instance, ask British taxpayers to stand behind
Greek or Spanish deposits. It’s not our currency so it wouldn’t be
appropriate to do that,” Cameron said.
Cameron also said that he wanted the euro zone to solve its
problems so that European economies can return to more robust growth.
“We want the euro zone to succeed. We want the euro to solve the
problem it faces so that all European economies, including ours, can
get back to healthy growth,” he said.
