The readings here are an indicator of short-term trends in the retail and wholesale sector of the UK economy. Retail sales balance improved from December but it doesn't mask the fact that the overall picture remains rather weak since mid-2018. CBI notes that pressure on the retail sector remains high and consumer spending is expected to remain fairly subdued.
