UK prime minister Theresa May comments in Brussels

  • Option to extend is not expected to be used
  • Expects transition period to end by the end of 2020
  • Does not see a gap between transition period and future trade deal
  • Have made good progress on Brexit talks
  • Issues remaining on Irish backstop
  • Says that could not accept initial EU proposal

Pretty much playing around with technicalities here. In order to break the deadlock in negotiations, May is seeking to extend the transition period - sending us into Brextra time! - which will be welcome by European leaders.

However, such a move won't win her any more supporters in parliament and from her own party and that is why she's trying to spin it around by putting that as an option which she "does not expect to be used".
