WASHINGTON (MNI) – House Speaker John Boehner said Thursday that he
would support a “serious series of hearings” by the House Financial
Services Committee on the Federal Reserve Board’s dual mandate, adding
there are times when the Fed’s responsibilities for boosting job growth
are in tension with its price stability mandate.
In comments on Bloomberg TV, Boehner offered sturdy praise for
Bernanke, adding that he met with the Fed chief earlier in the day.
“I’m glad he’s there,” Boehner said, referring to Bernanke’s
chairmanship of the Fed.
Boehner said Bernanke is serving in a “critical job at a very
difficult time not only for our economy, but around the world.”
Boehner said he endorsed Bernanke’s reappointment and has no
regrets for having done so.
“I don’t agree with all his decisions, but he’s got a tough job,”
Boehner said of Bernanke.
During the rest of the interview, Boehner repeated his view that he
is hopeful that Congress’ deficit reduction committee will achieve its
goal of $1.5 trillion in deficit reduction.
The Speaker also said he is prepared to work with President Obama
on jobs legislation, adding that parts of Obama’s plan deserve his
support.
He declined to be specific, but again criticized the tax increases
in Obama’s plan.
