US continuing jobless claims 1782K versus 1721K estimate

The initial jobless claims for the current week came in at 253K vs 215K estimate. This is the highest level for initial claims since September 30, 2017 when

it was 254,000.

  • The previous week's level was revised up by 1,000 from 199,000 to 200,000.
  • The 4-week moving average was 220,250, an increase of 5,000 from the previous week's revised average
  • The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending January 19 was 1,782,000, an increase of 69,000 from the previous week's unrevised level of 1,713,000.
  • This is the highest level for insured unemployment since April 28, 2018 when it was 1,794,000.
  • The 4-week moving average was 1,737,750, an increase of 8,000 from the previous week's unrevised average of 1,729,750. This is the highest level for this average since August 4, 2018 when it was 1,729,000.

The data should be taken with a grain of salt given the government shutdown and the Martin Luther King holiday (which can mess with seasonal adjustments).
