Boris Johnson quits

The rumors were true. UK foreign secretary Boris Johnson has submitted his resignation and Theresa May has accepted it.

Theresa May's office says a new foreign minister will appointed shortly.

PM office statement:

"This afternoon, the Prime Minister accepted the resignation of Boris Johnson as Foreign Secretary. His replacement will be announced shortly. The Prime Minister thanks Boris for his work."

This is setting up a real battle between hard and soft Brexiters. Naturally, Johnson is just angling to become Prime Minister himself.

Cable held firm for a short time but has rolled over in the past few minutes, dropping to 1.3260 and down 20 pips on the day after hitting the best levels since mid-June earlier.

This shows how nasty it's getting in UK politics.

Another report says pro-Brexit minister Liam Fox won't quit.
