The Times has obtained a leaked version of Theresa May's Brexit plan that could leave the UK in limbo for years.

The cabinet papers show Brexit would be a "rolling" process that could stall at annual decision points as the transition is reviewed.

Under the main option, "The U.K. would be given the unilateral option of either extending the implementation plan or going into the backstop if the FTA isn't ready by Dec 31 2020," according to Times reporter Sam Coates.

The story highlights the potential for the government to keep the UK in the customs union if there's no exit agreement and casts that as a problem, but it's a feature and diminishes the chance of a hard Brexit.
