LONDON (MNI) – UK manufacturers’ order books and output improved in
July but they became much less optimistic about the outlook, according
to the Confederation of British Industry.
The quarterly and monthly surveys for July showed manufacturers
expanding output but previous optimism that there would be widespread
expansion in activity has evaporated.
In the July monthly survey the total orders balance rose to -6 from
-11 in June and the output volume balance rose to 11 from 7.
The quarterly business optimism balance plunged, however, to -6
from 22 in the previous quarterly survey in April and the export
optimism balance fell to -3 from 29.
The survey provided further evidence of diminishing inflation
pressures. The July expected prices balanced dropped to -3 from 2 in
June, hitting its lowest level since October 2009.
The CBI highlighted the resilience in activity in the sector.
Anna Leach, CBI head of economic analysis, said “Despite a further
escalation in the Eurozone crisis, this survey shows some resilience in
the UK manufacturing sector with sentiment.”
“Both demand and production grew steadily in the three months to
July, and this is expected to continue over the next three months,” she
added.
