China's foreign ministry comments
- Says that US and Canada have yet to provide any evidence of wrongdoing
- Reassures that China will protect rights of foreigners in China
The worry here is that this sets out a dangerous precedent for businessmen/women working overseas in either of the countries involved. If they are able to be arrested without fronting initial and probable cause of wrongdoing, where exactly do you draw the line?
Although it's clear we know why Canada and US are targeting Huawei's CFO in this case, in an official capacity they have been silent on the matter and the worry here is that the public outcry will escalate even further.
I was speaking to a friend and he said wouldn't want to be a US executive working in China right now and I very much agree. The amount of backlash you could receive if things take a turn for the worse here is potentially rather scary.
