–Long Island Has Most Properties At Risk of Flooding

By Ian McKendry

WASHINGTON (MNI) – More than 1 million properties are potentially
at risk of flooding and storm surge from Hurricane Irene as it makes
its way up the East Coast, a report from data analytics firm CoreLogic
said Thursday.

“Among the 12 coastal major metro areas included in the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) cone of concern and analyzed
by CoreLogic, an estimated 1,874,794 properties are at potential risk of
storm surge flooding,” CoreLogic said.

The report said Long Island has the most properties at risk with
387,813 if Irene continues on it’s projected path. Virginia Beach had
the second most properties with 351,478, followed by Providence, Rhode
Island at 255,209, and Boston, 215,219.

On a conference call with reporters earlier Thursday Federal
Emergency Management Agency Administrator Craig Fugate warned of
widespread damage as a result of the storm, including high winds, and
flooding that could result in power outages and other damage.

Bill Read, Director at the NOAA’s National Hurricane Center said
the storm is projected to move north, northwest up along the coast, but
did not rule out the possibility it could veer west and potentially hit
the Baltimore-Washington area.

The CoreLogic report was done under the assumption of a Category 3
hurricane.
