STUTTGART, Germany (MNI) – The Single European Payment Area (SEPA)
will soon be trusted just like the euro, European Central Bank Executive
Board member Gertrude Tumpel-Gugerell argued Tuesday.
In remarks prepared for delivery here, the central banker, an
avowed cheerleader for the single payment area, said that in discussions
surrounding SEPA, it should be emphasized that a single and fully
implemented means of payment already exists — the euro.
“At its implementation, there was to some extent criticism and
skepticism,” Tumpel-Gugerell reminded, but “today it is a solid currency
in which we trust.”
“I am of the firm conviction that in the near future we will be
able to say the same about the single European payment area,” she
predicted.
